The
Sugar and Spice story
Its
journey so far...
|
. .
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
.
A
long time ago in a wee fishing town called
Arbroath,
on the east coast of Scotland (where the
famous Declaration of Arbroath was signed),
there was a wee fish house at the "Fit
O the toon".
This little fish house (at the foot of the
high street) was owned by R. R. Spink, producers
of the now Famous Arbroath Smokie, sold
worldwide.
Sadly, due to the decline in the fishing
industry here in Arbroath a lot of the fish
houses had to close and many worthy fisher
folk had to rethink their lives. Some decided
to retire not wanting to struggle on with
the new rules and regulations which were
imposed on them, and others had no choice
but to relocate to purpose built premises
on industrial estates.
However
there are still the hardy few (my Dad Matthew
Smith, and my Grand dad Bill Spink, amongst
others) who still produce the Famous Arbroath
Smokie here at the "Fit O the
toon", right down to this very day!
So
it was in 2001 that this empty fish house,
full of memories of a bygone era and echos
of a busy maritime industry, was transformed
into Sugar & Spice! ... A sweetie shop,
born from a fish shop!!
|

Sweeties
everywhere!!

Gifts
to suit all tastes!

The
Sugar & Spice Ice Cream Parlour!
|
Jean
and Jim Stewart originally opened the
sweetie and candy shop - calling it 'Sugar
& Spice' - and realised within weeks
more space was required. So it was decided
that they would open up the main building,
then also introducing unusual giftware
including old fashioned toys - which it
proved would bring back many a fond memory.
Nowhere in the shop would you find any
computer games, computer accessories or
such like! In fact, Jean would often say
say - "A computer, what's that??!!
The Sugar & Spice shop was developed
further with the introduction of the Tea
& Ice-cream parlour, which proved
quite popular! Visitors could relax (...the
keyword here dear customer!), and enjoy
a flavour of times gone by, with many
to choose from. The staff dressed in old
fashioned pinnies (aprons) and hats, catering
to the customers every need.
Well it was time for Jean and Jim to hang
up their pinnies, to retire and begin
spending some quality time with each other,
and of course their beloved dogs. So,
they handed over the reins to the Smith
family, myself (Sonia), my Mum (Margaret)
and Dad (Matthew). You can see them still
at work in the fish house - M & M
Smith - across the road where Matthew
still smokes the famous Arbroath smokie.
So on Wednesday 1st October 2008 we took
over the business ...our motto being "If
it's not broken, don't fix it! Jim and
Jean had certainly got the recipe just
right! Sugar & Spice was just waiting
for the page to turn into the next chapter
in it's colourful story! On to bigger
and better things! ...we said!
